Press Release February 02, 2010 Canton, IL, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1984 recently announced its Voice of Democracy winner for the 2009 year. The post winner was Jessica Erickson of Fairview a student of Valley High School (North Fulton). The theme for the program was "Does America still have heroes?' This program is an annual recorded oratory program open to high school students and sponsored by the V.F.W. Jessica also received honorable mention at the district level competition. Mrs. LeAnn Posting a teacher from Cuba High School was also honored for her efforts in making this program a class project. Students from Canton, Farmington, Cuba and Valley were given the opportunity to enter the competition and will be given the same opportunity again this coming year. There are awards given at the local level as well the chance to win $30,000.00 scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. on the national Level. The V.F.W. also has the Patriots Pen Program for junior high school students. This program is a written essay program. There are prizes and awards given at all levels for this competition as well. The themes for the 2010 programs will be announced and information will be going out to the schools within the next several weeks according to the post Voice of Democracy Chairman Wayne Erickson
